Adding a Recipe to Recipe Minder

There are several ways to add recipes to recipe minder. They include manually adding recipes, importing recipe files individually, and importing many files at once.

Adding a recipe Manually

To add a recipe manually, First locate the 'add recipe' button at the top of the application and click on it. A new screen will appear with text boxes allowing you to input your recipe. While better information on each recipe is important, it is not required. The only fields that are required for a recipe are title, ingredients, and description. All other feilds are optional. Below is a short explantion of each field.

Title: The title of the recipe. Recipe Minder can handle long titles but its best to keep your titles short to better format recipes when printing and showing many recipes at once in the recipes panel.

Category: Setting up categories can help sort recipes later. Such as a category named 'Salad Dressings' contains all types of salad dressings. Then when you need a recipe for salad dressings, you can sort the recipes to only show that category. Categories will need to be added prior to adding a new recipe.

Menu: Much like categories, menus can help you sort recipes once they have been added. Menus can be in the form of daily menus to special occasion menus such as holiday foods. Menus will also need to be set up prior to adding any recipes.

Prep Time: This field allows you to enter the preperation time for the recipe. The format for prep time is hh:mm . Which means that the first two characters are hours and the last two are minutes.

Cook Time: The time a recipe will need to cook before being ready to serve. Recipes that need to stand will also need to be added into the cook time field. The format for cook time is hh:mm . Which means that the first two characters are hours and the last two are minutes.

Total Time: The total time it takes to prepare the dish from start to serving. The format for total time is hh:mm . Which means that the first two characters are hours and the last two are minutes.

Cost: The amount of money the dish costs to make.

Servings: The yield or number of servings the recipe makes.

Serving Size: The size of each individual serving

Source: This field is for credit to where the recipe came from such as a website or magazine.

Fat: The number of fat grams that the recipe has per serving.

Cholesterol: The number of cholesterol mg a recipe has per serving.

Sodium: The number of sodium mg the recipe has for each serving.

Carbs: The number of carbohydrates a recipe has for each serving.

Protein: The number of protein grams a recipe has for each serving.

Fiber: The number of fiber grams a recipe has for each serving.

Calories: The number of calories a recipe has for each serving.

Points: The number of points a recipe has for each serving. Points can be calculated by pressing the calculate link next to the points field. However only a rough calculation is made and all other nutrition information fields must be completed before attempting to calculate points.

Notes: Adding notes allows you to remember certain items about the recipe. Notes were added to help you add your touch to the recipe or to remind you of things that may not be in the recipe.

Image: To add an image to a recipe, first you'll need to select the 'add image' checkbox. Then the image name field will become enabled. Click on the 'Add Image' button and locate the image file on your hard drive. Once you have selected your image and pressed ok, then your image should appear on the add recipe page. Type in an image name for the image in the 'Image Name' field. Note that this does not need to be the name of the original image.

Ingredients: Ingredients are what makes up the recipe. Each ingredient will need to be on its own line with the following format: quantity unit item seperated by a space. an example is below:

1 cup sugar
2 tsp salt
1 oz water

All ingredients will need to be entered in the ingredients field for searching purposes.

Directions: The directions of the recipe. This includes any special notes that pertain to the recipe. Each line return in the directions field is considered a step in the recipe.

Submitting your recipe

Once all of the recipe information is entered, you can submit your recipe to be included in the database. Once you press submit you will be given a confirmation of the result. If the recipe was added successfully a message box will appear and inform you that the recipe was added. If you recieve an error such as 'Title Field Required', you will need to go back and correct that field. To browse to different sections of the add recipe process, simply press the corresponding tab at the top of the add recipe dialog.
